​Getting to Pontygwaith


By Car

  • At the ‘Treharris’ roundabout on the A470 exit onto the A472 signposted Ystrad Mynach and Aberfan. After approximately 200m you will reach another roundabout.
  • Take the 1st exit onto A4054/Fiddlers elbow signposted Quakers Yard. Stay on A4054 for approximately 1.5 miles, past a ‘Total’ petrol station on the left. Shortly after passing the garage you will pass a speed camera on the left and enter a 20mph zone.
  • Shortly after you pass a graveyard on the left turn left onto Windsor Road signposted for the Quakers Yard Train Station. Head down hill and after about 200m bear right to stay on Windsor Rd.
  • After another 200m (approx) turn left onto Taff Vale Estate
  • At the T junction turn right
  • Quakers Yard Train Station is approximately 200m down the road on the left.​

By Train

  • The Barry Island to Merthyr Tydfil Train stops at Quakers Yard
  • This train stops at Barry Island, Barry Station, Barry Docks, Cadoxton, Dinas Powys, Eastbrook, Cogan, Grangetown, Cardiff Central, Cardiff Queen Street, Cathays, Llandaf, Radyr, Taffs Well, Trefforest Estate, Trefforest Station, Pontypridd, Abercynon, Quakers Yard, Merthyr Vale, Troed-Y-Rhiw, Pentre-Bach, Merthyr Tydfil and runs every half hour.

By Foot/Bike/Horse

  • You can access the reserve from the Taff Trail (marked on the map as Tram Road East) which runs all the way from Brecon in the North to Cardiff.
  • Alternatively if you are coming from Edwardsville you can enter the reserve by crossing rail tracks (the eastern boundary).​
